Kathryn and I are always getting comments from people about how crazy we are. Looking back at the last twenty five years of our friendship, I realize we weren’t always that way! It seems like as our friendship has grown so has our sense of adventure. It kind of started out if you’ll do it then I will, sort of thing. Now we just say to hell with it and we may race to see who does it first! Really I think we started acting outside of our comfort zone when we would take scuba trips out of the country. There’s a certain freedom about being around people you don’t know and are never gonna see again.
We start the trip out decompressing. It takes a little while to get acclimated. Get checked in, unpacked, set up our dive trips and head to the pool. Kathryn and I get into the swing of things pretty quick. We are there to make the most of the trip and look forward to new adventures that will be talked about for years to come. You can always tell who the first timers are because by the second day they are red as tomatoes from sunburn and miserable. As the week progresses everyone starts to relax and get his or her second wind.
We would always go out the night before departure for one last time of uninhibited crazy fun. Knowing that you’ll be going back to the 9 to 5 soon, there is almost a sense of panic to make it memorable enough to last until the next trip. We usually pick a place that is packed to the gills so there are plenty of people to observe because as everyone knows ….that’s what we do! Lol. After we partake in a few cocktails, I’m sure we have also become someone’s topic of conversation. That’s ok turn about is fair play. By the end of the night everyone is dancing, conversing with each other like they were old friends. We head back to the hotel where we fall into bed just in time to get a few hours of sleep before heading to the airport.
The morning you wake up to head home, you instantly start to reset your mind to what is going on at home and what has to done as soon as you get there. It’s back to the grindstone. However it’s pretty funny when you get to the airport and see those people you were acting crazy around and they you. Everyone is wearing sunglasses or maybe a hoody, all along thinking they have succeeded in disguising themselves.. NOT. Can you say awkward? Our strategy is to find a corner and continue to observe. I mean, we are scratching for some last minute of entertainment and usually there is someone there that does not disappoint!
After traveling to the Caribbean for scuba and fun over the last twenty some odd years, we have realized that only being that way out of the country is just not enough. Why not be crazy all the time?? We don’t mind entertaining everyone. It’s a sacrifice we are wiling to make. And maybe you should try being uninhibited yourself. Kathryn and I have made it a habit to surround ourselves with people that act the same. Yes we have a lot of crazy, fun friends. As our friend Robin says, “ We’re like honey badgers, we don’t care!!”
