We recently sat down with Jimmy R O Smith, whom is currently on tour with Jennifer Lopez for the second time, which is not an easy feat since he was the only dancer that earned the honor. Through the years he has really made a name for himself in the entertainment industry and if you have ever seen him dance on stage, you would know why. The man is a beast and dances with no holds barred. Jimmy has also worked with Beyonce’, Usher and The Black Eyed Peas, so you can imagine the list that follows. He is currently living his dream and also delving into choreography, with credits such as “Super Bowl Half Time Show”, “Dancing With the Stars” and “Stomp The Yard”. I mean….who wouldn’t want to be living his life right now?
Of coarse we were interested in talking with Jimmy because of his accomplishments in the dance industry but in the process we discovered so much more about Mr. Smith.
Jimmy is a true Texas boy. He went to college down the road at Prairie View A&M and graduated with his sights set on teaching. His sister Dot was originally the person in the family with the dancing shoes. She was a dancer for the Houston Rockets and through this experience; Jimmy decided that he would try his hand. We jokingly proclaimed that he owed his career to D-o-t and with a jovial laugh he answers “it’s spelled G-O-D”. If you are around Jimmy for any amount of time you realize that he is a man of faith. In our interview, he tells a funny story of when he and his sibling were young, that no matter what, they went to church on Sunday’s. EVEN if Mom wasn’t going …..they had to go with the neighbors! He looks back in hindsight and realizes it provided a cornerstone of faith that guides him in all aspects of his life.
Jimmy told us that when he discovered dancing, there was some sense of frustration because he felt like the money and time in college was wasted on a teaching degree, but now there is a whole new perspective. For the past week Jennifer Lopez has been performing in San Antonio, Dallas and Houston Texas. We interviewed him in between teaching Hip Hop classes to junior high and high school students here in the area and really enjoying it! He talks about giving back and God putting things into perspective and showing him that his degree did not go to waste.
Kathryn and I are honored that Jimmy found time in his busy schedule to sit down with us and give some InSite into a life that is foreign to a lot of us. But he definitely is a man with a purpose. Check out the full interview here if you want to know more about Mr. Jimmy R O Smith. And in closing we would like to say good job to his Mother …….and the Neighbors! Ha Ha.
